This work carries on day and night, whenever the low tides and weather allow the crane, from which the cage holding the workmen is suspended, onto the beach below.<br/><br/>I found night time on the pier to have an eerie silence, especially further down its length, away from the clatter of the clean-up operation. As the tide rolled in below, broken only by the sporadic seagull squawks in the darkness, and the distant noises of the traffic and people on the seafront, I took a few moments to reflect on my own memories of the pier.<br/><br/>It has a strange, lonely atmosphere, while only a stone's throw from the prom, one could be in another world, cut off, adrift, its quite unsettling. Parts of it look almost skeleton-like, and it feels like that too; a dinosaur from a time gone by - perhaps so many great times spent here, by so many people, over so many decades, have ingrained themselves somehow into its structure.<br/><br/>I hope you enjoy the photographs, please feel free to leave a comment - it's great to get some feedback. src="http://www.paulstevenkelly.com/img/s9/v13/p985286694-3.jpg"/></a></p> <p>Hastings now holds the Guinness World Record for the most pirates ever assembled in one place, over 6,000 pirates converged on Hastings beach for the count (smashing the previous record of a little over 1,800). I hope you enjoy my record of the day.<br/><br/>UPDATE: The record for the most number of 'pirates' in one place has unofficially been broken by thousands of people gathered in Penzance, Cornwall. A total of 8,734 people in fancy dress assembled on Penance promenade on Sunday 26th June 2011. They broke the previous world record set by 6,166 pirates in Hastings in 2010.
